Safety

Both the Cherokee and Tonale have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Cherokee has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The Tonale’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the Cherokee are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The Tonale doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The Jeep Cherokee’s optional 360-degree camera has integrated front and rear camera washers, ensuring clear, all-weather visibility without the need for manual cleaning. In contrast, the Alfa Romeo Tonale lacks camera washers, requiring you to manually clean the cameras for optimal performance.

Both the Cherokee and the Tonale have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, all-wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

The Jeep Cherokee weighs 580 pounds more than the Alfa Romeo Tonale. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

Warranty

Jeep’s powertrain warranty covers the Cherokee 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Alfa Romeo covers the Tonale. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the Tonale ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are over 23 times as many Jeep dealers as there are Alfa Romeo dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Cherokee’s warranty.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Cherokee gets better fuel mileage than the Tonale (39 city/35 hwy vs. 21 city/29 hwy).

Regenerative brakes improve the Cherokee’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The Tonale doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Jeep Cherokee uses regular unleaded gasoline. The Tonale requires premium for maximum efficiency, which can cost on average about 84.9 cents more per gallon.

Transmission

The Cherokee has a standard continuously variable transmission (CVT). With no “steps” between gears, it can keep the engine at the most efficient speed for fuel economy, or keep it at its peak horsepower indefinitely for maximum acceleration. The Tonale doesn’t offer a CVT.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Cherokee’s standard brake rotors are larger than those on the Tonale:

Cherokee

Tonale

Front Rotors

13 inches

12.1 inches

Rear Rotors

12.6 inches

10.9 inches

Tires and Wheels

The Cherokee has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The Tonale doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

The Cherokee offers an optional space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the Tonale; it requires you to depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Cherokee’s wheelbase is 9.2 inches longer than on the Tonale (113 inches vs. 103.8 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Cherokee is 2 inches wider in the front and 2.1 inches wider in the rear than on the Tonale.

For greater off-road capability the Cherokee has a 1.9 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Tonale (8 vs. 6.1 inches), allowing the Cherokee to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis

The front grille of the Cherokee uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Tonale doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The Cherokee uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The Tonale doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

Passenger Space

The Cherokee has 1.4 inches more front headroom, .8 inches more front hip room and 1.9 inches more front shoulder room than the Tonale.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Cherokee’s rear seats recline. The Tonale’s rear seats don’t recline.

Cargo Capacity

The Cherokee has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Tonale with its rear seat up (33.6 vs. 27 cubic feet). The Cherokee has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Tonale with its rear seat folded (68.3 vs. 54.7 cubic feet).

Towing

The Cherokee’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Tonale’s (3500 vs. 3307 pounds).

Ergonomics

The Cherokee’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The Tonale has neither an oil pressure gauge nor a temperature gauge.

The Cherokee’s standard Keyless Enter-N-Go allow you to unlock the doors from any outside door handle, open the cargo door, and start the engine, all without removing the key from pocket or purse. Keyless-Enter-n-Go standard on the Tonale doesn’t offer a sensor on the rear doors, so you’ll have to reach a front handle to unlock the rear doors.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Cherokee has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the Tonale only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

Both the Cherokee and the Tonale offer available heated front seats. The Cherokee Overland also has standard heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the Tonale.

The Cherokee Overland has a 115-volt a/c outlet, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The Tonale doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.
